Kurt Busch eyes possible IndyCar debut at Auto Club Speedway

Busch would like to run the IndyCar Series finale at Auto Club Speedway in advance of a possible attempt to race in the 2014 Indianapolis 500.

The IndyCar Series finale at Auto Club Speedway on Oct. 18-19 could see Kurt Busch officially make his debut in an Indy car.

According to Motor Racing Network reporter Dustin Long, Busch has given himself a “good possibility” of competing in the race, which takes place on the Saturday afternoon prior to the Sprint Cup Series race at Talladega Superspeedway -- assuming that adequate funding can be found.

“We’re working on it,” Busch told Long during a Sprint Cup test session at Watkins Glen. “We just have to keep our fingers crossed.”

Busch tested for Andretti Autosport at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on May 9, and completed his required rookie orientation program in the process. “The Outlaw” turned 83 laps with a fast lap at 218.210 miles per hour.

This past weekend, prior to the Brickyard 400, he again stated his interest in running the “Greatest Spectacle in Racing.”

“We’ll see,” Busch said on pit road after time trials for the Brickyard 400. “Advertising opportunities is what motorsports are all about and having the right sponsorship to go out there and do it. Until you get the chance to advertise with somebody, it’s one of those hotspot situations -- but it would be great to do it either way.”

Following his Andretti test, Busch stated that he wanted to take part in an IndyCar oval race before attempting the Indianapolis 500 and the 2012 season finale is likely his last chance to do so. The Indianapolis 500 has been the first oval race on the schedule for each of the last three seasons.
