2014 Indy 500 live results: Pole-sitter Ed Carpenter sets the pace early
Indiana native and pole-sitter Ed Carpenter is out front in the early portions of the Indianapolis 500.
Under sunny, clear skies and a packed grandstand the green flag dropped on the 98th running of the Indianapolis 500.
Not exhibiting the frantic pace of a year ago, the field of 33 drivers quickly settled into single-file racing around the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval. The 2013 edition of the Indy 500 featured a record 68 lead changes, attributed in part to much cooler temperatures than this year.

Starting inside of Row 1, James Hinchcliffe grabbed the lead from pole-sitter Ed Carpenter. The Canadian led the initial 12 laps before Carpenter worked his way back around.
Three-time Indy 500 winner Helio Castroneves and current Verizon IndyCar Series points leader Will Power ran third and fourth, respectively. Castroneves and Power are both members of Team Penske, which has won a record 15 Indy 500s. J.R. Hildebrand is fifth.
Exercising patience in his first Indy 500 start, Kurt Busch slid back to the 16th position after starting 11th. Busch is a full-time NASCAR driver who will fly immediately after the race to Charlotte Motor Speedway where he will run the Coca-Cola 600.
