The total purse for the 2014 Indianapolis 500 was $14.23 million, according to the Associated Press, via TimesUnion.com. The winnings were announced Monday night. The top payday goes to Ryan Hunter-Reay, who managed to win big after passing Helio Castroneves on the last lap. Hunter-Reay moved underneath Castroneves entering the first turn of the final lap, and moved in front.

Ryan Hunter-Reay took home a healthy chunk of change after winning the 2014 Indianapolis 500.


Castroneves attempted to gain back first multiple times, but came up short, finishing 0.600 seconds behind Hunter-Reay. For the victory, Hunter-Reay earned a total of $2.49 million in winnings. He recorded a final lap of 220.927 mph, edging out Castroneves’ 220.729 mph. Hunter-Reay held the lead nine times for 56 laps, and started the race back at 19th.
Castroneves earned a total of $785,194 for his second-place finish, a healthy amount below Hunter-Reay’s winnings. Marco Andretti and Carlos Munoz rounded out the top four, earning $585,194 and $449,194, respectively. Juan Pablo Montoya finished fifth, just his second time competing in the event, and took home $441,944. Another notable is Ed Carpenter, who finished 27th and earned $463,694, which included a $100,000 award for winning the pole.
