Helio Castroneves crashes, flips during Indianapolis 500 practice
The three-time Indy 500 winner walked away uninjured.
Castroneves lost control as he was going through Turn 1 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The car spun backwards into the wall, then lifted off the ground and flipped over before landing on its wheels. Safety workers arrived immediately and after several minutes Castroneves removed himself out of the wreckage under his own power.
The three-time Indy 500 winner was transported to the infield medical center for further evaluation. Roughly 30 minutes after the accident, a public relations representative posted a message on Castroneves’ Twitter account saying the driver is “Fine, no injuries! Thank you!”
Caastroneves was practicing for this weekend’s time trials for the May 24 running of the Indianapolis 500. With a fourth victory, the Brazilian would join A.J. Foyt, Al Unser Sr. and Rick Mears as the only four-time winners.
