For the second consecutive day, a driver walked away uninjured from a harrowing crash that saw them get flipped over during Indianapolis 500 practice.
Another driver crashes, flips upside down in Indianapolis 500 practice
Josef Newgarden was the second driver in as many days to escape injury after crashing in Indy 500 practice.
The latest incident occurred late Thursday afternoon when Josef Newgarden’s car broke loose through Turn 1 and sent him nose-first into the wall, where the impact lifted his car off the ground, where it flipped before landing upside down.
After emerging from the wreckage, Newgarden briefly placed his hands on his knees before walking slowly to an awaiting ambulance that transported him to the infield medical center. He was released and cleared to resume driving.
Newgarden’s accident bared some resemblance to that of Helio Castroneves’ crash on Wednesday. The three-time Indianapolis 500 champion also lost control in Turn 1 and somersaulted after contacting the outside wall. Castroneves was not hurt and returned to practice later that same day.
Drivers are practicing for the May 24 Indianapolis 500. Qualifying is held Saturday and Sunday.
