Jack Harvey’s goal to win the Indianapolis 500 may be a step closer after he took home the victory in the Indy Lights Freedom 100 under caution on Friday. Indy Lights points-leader Ed Jones hit the wall hard with four laps remaining in the race after his right rear tire went down, possibly costing an exciting finish. Instead, it gave Harvey his second victory at Indianapolis Motor Speedway this month.
2015 Indy 500: Indy Lights Freedom 100 results
Schmidt Peterson Motorsports cars finished in the top four at the Indy Lights race held during Carb Day on Friday in Indianapolis.
Schmidt Peterson Motorsports may be the true winner, though, as the team’s four cars finished 1-2-3-4. Ethan Ringel, Scott Anderson and RC Enerson finished in the second through fourth positions. This was the eighth victory at Indy for Schmidt Peterson.
SPM will have three cars in the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, although James Hinchcliffe, who was injured in a horrific crash during practice, will not be one of them. Ryan Briscoe will start in his stead. As a replacement driver he’ll start 33rd, however, after Hinchcliffe qualified 24th. SPM teammates James Jakes qualified at 20th and Conor Daly 25th.
Freedom 100 pole-sitter Ringel actually led 30 of the 40 laps in the 100-mile race, with front-row partner Harvey leading the rest. The 22-year-old Harvey finished second in the series in 2014 after winning four races and never finishing outside the top five. Harvey also won the first Indy Lights race at IMS, held May 8.
Sean Rayhall, started third but finished in sixth.
