The prohibitive favorites to win Sunday’s Indianapolis 500 each showed why, as Will Power and Scott Dixon led the final session of practice Friday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Will Power and Scott Dixon led the final practice before Sunday’s Indianapolis 500.
Power’s speed of 229.020 mph edged Dixon (228.585 mph) to pace the one-hour round known as Carb Day. Aligned with IndyCar’s two powerhouse teams, Dixon (Chip Ganassi Racing) and Power (Team Penske) will start 1-2 Sunday. Ganassi and Penske have won a combined 20 Indianapolis 500s and nine of the past 15.
“It means nothing, really, it’s just a big draft,” Power said. “It’s all about how well you can pass. Our plan is to just stay up there all day.”
Rounding out the top five were Tony Kanaan, Simon Pagenaud and Takuma Sato. Just as it has throughout the month, Chevrolet led the way, with Sato being the only Honda-powered driver to crack the top eight.
Except for three brief cautions for track inspections, the session was uneventful. There were no incidents with the 33-starters running a total of 1,195 laps.
The lack of drama was welcomed after four high-profile incidents saw Helio Castroneves, Josef Newgarden and Ed Carpenter get airborne and a fourth, James Hinchcliffe, crash violently into the Turn 3 wall.
Castroneves, Newgarden and Carpenter were uninjured, while Hinchcliffe sustained serious leg injuries and will miss Sunday’s race. Ryan Briscoe replaced Hinchcliffe and posted the 30th-fastest time Friday.
