2016 Indy 500 Weather forecast: Are rain chances a big or little deal?

Rain showers are in the forecast for the big 100th running of the Greatest Spectacle in racing? Check out the weather forecast for all the activities at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Indianapolis 500.

The Friday before the Indianapolis 500 is the Miller Lite Carb Day. Carb Day at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is the last chance teams have to practice and get their cars ready for the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500.

Rain has been around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway all week and we could have a chance of showers and thunderstorms again on Friday. Most of the rain and storms will move through during the morning then we could see isolated showers and storms late in the day. It will be very warm and humid with temperatures in the mid 80s.

As for the 100th running of the Greatest Spectacle in Racing, the Indianapolis 500, there is a chance of showers and storms but they are more isolated in nature. They are what you might call pop-up or hit-or-miss showers and storms. They will more than likely form near the end of the race, but there’s no way to forecast their exact location.

When I forecast weather for NASCAR races I give the probability of racing over the probability of rain. For the Indianapolis 500 I have an 80-85 percent chance of racing and getting the whole thing complete. I’d say the odds of seeing a delay due to rain is about 30, maybe 40 percent, and the likelihood of a washout is less than 20 percent.
