Carlos Munoz was second on the speed chart (224.772) mph, followed by Scott Dixon, Will Power and Ryan Hunter-Reay, the 2014 Indianapolis 500 winner.
“I’m happy. I’m happy with my car,” said Kanaan, who qualified 18th. “Obviously I have to pass 17 people before I get really happy with my car. But, you know, after the struggle in qualifying, we really focused.”
Pole-sitter James Hinchcliffe was 12th overall, while defending race-winner Juan Pablo Montoya was 14th.
The only incident saw Pippa Mann get loose exiting Turn 4 and hit the outside wall before sliding down and colliding with the pit wall. She got out of the damaged car without assistance and was evaluated before being released from the infield care center.
