2016 Indy 500: Lineup and starting grid

Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

The 2016 Indianapolis 500 has several former winners in the 33-car field on Sunday, but pay special attention to a pair of multiple winners at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in the iconic race.

Juan Pablo Montoya won the 2015 Indianapolis 500 and though he set a race record with 15 years in between Indy 500 victories, Montoya is still relatively green at The Brickyard. He won the 2000 Indy 500 as a rookie, but then through years on the Formula One circuit and in NASCAR, Montoya didn’t even return to Indianapolis until 2014.

So he has only raced the Indy 500 three times and won twice, and Sunday marks his first time taking to the track as reigning champion. Not that he places any importance on that.

“I don’t care [about being the defending champ],” Montoya told the Associated Press on May 15. “If it gives us an advantage, great. But I just want to do a good job and give myself a chance. That’s all you can do.”

Montoya will start in 17th position, in the middle of the sixth row on Sunday, while his Team Penske teammate Helio Castroneves starts in ninth position, on the outside of the sixth row.

Castroneves won the Indianapolis 500 in 2001, 2002 and 2009, and is trying to tie the race record with a fourth career win. Other four-time winners at Indy are A.J. Foyt, Al Unser and Rick Mears.

ABC will televise the Indianapolis 500 beginning with a pre-race show at 11 a.m. ET, followed by race coverage begins at noon. Allen Bestwick will call the race, joined by analysts Scott Goodyear and Eddie Cheever in the booth, plus pit reporters Jon Beekhuis, Rick DeBruhl and Dr. Jerry Punch. The green flag is scheduled for 12:17 p.m.

Online coverage of the race will be available on WatchESPN.
