Juan Pablo Montoya will not win a second consecutive Indianapolis 500 -- a crash into the backstretch wall ended his bid on lap 64 of 200 Sunday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The defending race winner spun off Turn 2 and collided with the outside wall.

Montoya lost control exiting Turn 2, spinning into the outside wall then back down the track, forcing several drivers to take evasive action. No other cars sustained damage. The Colombian was evaluated and released from infield care center.
At the time of the incident Montoya was running 19th. He had started 17th.

Montoya was seeking to become the first driver to record back-to-back Indianapolis 500s since Helio Castroneves won in 2001 and ‘02. Montoya also won in 2000 and had never finished worse than fifth in three prior Indianapolis starts.
“I just got loose, it just snapped,” Montoya said. “The car just stepped out of nowhere.”
Ryan Hunter-Reay, who entered Sunday as a favorite to win, dominated the first 150 miles, leading 38 of 60 laps.
