IndyCar Series driver Josef Newgarden was airlifted to a Dallas area hospital after being involved in a harrowing crash during Sunday’s race at Texas Motor Speedway.
Frightening crash sends IndyCar driver Josef Newgarden to hospital
Newgarden sustained a fractured right clavicle and a small fracture on his right hand.

The accident began when Conor Daly lost control exiting Turn 4 and spun into Newgarden, with both drivers slamming into the outside wall. A secondary impact followed with Newgarden hitting the same wall cockpit-first. The crash punctured a hole in the energy-absorbent protective barrier.
Track workers immediately surrounded Newgarden’s demolished car. After a few minutes he extracted himself, but as he was walking away to an awaiting safety vehicle the 25-year-old collapsed on the track. He was loaded onto a stretcher and taken to the infield care center before being transported to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas for evaluation.
IndyCar later announced Newgarden sustained a fractured right clavicle and a small fracture on his right hand.
Daly was not injured. He accepted responsibility for causing the accident.
“I was the rookie that made the mistake,” Daly told NBCSN. “Lost grip. Felt like I floated through the corner. It was my mistake. I should have recognized it.”
