Indy 500: Full finishing order at Indianapolis Motor Speedway

Will Power has won the 2018 Indianapolis 500. He started the race from third, and it came down to the final five laps when there were a few drivers ahead on much older tires who were trying to push to the end. They didn’t make it, while Power finished just clear of pole-sitter Ed Carpenter. Scott Dixon finished third.

Alexander Rossi started 32nd on the grid, second to last, but managed to finish fourth thanks to some brilliant driving upon multiple caution restarts.

Defending champion Takuma Sato didn’t even get to make it halfway through the race before the first crash of the day ended his bid. Sato was on the racing line and trailing James Davison, who after a pit stop was running very slowly, but still on the line. Sato had nowhere to go, and hit the back of Davison, ending the race for both drivers.

Ed Jones became the next driver to crash, but did not collect any other cars in said crash. It prompted the second yellow of the race.

Unfortunately for her, Danica Patrick’s racing career came to an end when she crashed out on Lap 68. She announced prior to the race that it would be her last one, and unfortunately, it ended when she lost the back of her car at the bottom of a turn, and spun into the wall. She got out of the car on her own and is fine, but a tough way to end a wonderful racing career.

“I’m not really sure what happened, I just seemed to come around. Seemed pretty late at the corner,” Patrick said.

“I’ve had a lot of good fortune, and did still have some this month. It just didn’t come on race day,” she continued. “But we had some good moments.”

Sebastien Bourdais, one of the front-runners, crashed on Lap 141 and became the next to catch a DNF. Then it was another front-runner, three-time winner Helio Castroneves. He, again, lost the back-end of his car and it took him all the way across the track and into the wall at the entrance of pit road.

Castroneves was hoping for his fourth Indy 500 win, but he won’t get it, at least this year. Sage Karam was next, going into the wall in similar fashion when he lost the back-end. Tony Kanaan lost control of his car with 12 laps to go and went into the wall, ending his race. He led at one point earlier in said race.

James Hinchcliffe will not be listed with the rest of the drivers, as he was notably one of the two — alongside Pippa Mann — to lose out in qualifying on Bump Day. Hinchcliffe is a fan favorite and many had high hopes for him in this year’s race, but he didn’t make the top 33 drivers.
