It's been noted many times by announcers that a players' hair is part of their uniform and thus defensive players are able to grab it -- famously, Larry Johnson tackled Troy Polamalu by his hair:
But I don’t think we’ve ever seen a dude literally get his hair get ripped out. I mean, it looks like Babin scalped him. Unfortunately -- or perhaps luckily -- he came out of a pile with it, so we can’t actually see the hair get ripped out.
Update: Ellington says he’s all good:
