Tuesday is Nov. 11, the 96th anniversary of the armistice that ended World War I. In America, we call the holiday celebrated on that day “Veterans Day.” In the UK, today is Remembrance Sunday, and people wear poppies on their clothing to commemorate soldiers who have died in wars, an homage to World War I poem “In Flanders Fields.”
Cowboys, Jaguars wear remembrance poppies on uniforms in London
Football sometimes seems out of place in London, but today the Cowboys and Jaguars are fitting in by remembering Britain’s war dead and taking part in a charity drive for British veterans.
Today, the Jaguars and Cowboys are playing in London, so they’re taking part in the British tradition by wearing clothing with poppies on it:
After the game, the uniforms off as part of the British Legion’s annual Poppy Appeal, which raises money for British armed forces members, veterans, and their families. 80,000 poppies will be dropped into the stands as well.
