Just when you thought the Chicago Bears' nightmare slide couldn't get any worse, Sunday night happened. The Bears were routed, 55-17, by the Green Bay Packers on primetime television, handing Chicago its third-straight loss.
Bears ‘are not a good football team right now,’ says Marc Trestman
The head coach took responsibility for the team’s disappointing season in the wake of a nightmare loss to Green Bay.

The final score doesn't really do the loss justice, either: the Packers took their foot off the gas after going into halftime up 42-0. The Bears defense allowed Aaron Rodgers to throw six touchdowns, while Jay Cutler threw two picks, the ground attack averaged 2.3 yards per carry and special teams was a nightmare. After the game, head coach Marc Trestman pointed out the obvious.
“We’re not a good football team right now,” he said during his postgame press conference. “We’ve descended over the last three weeks and we didn’t make any changes or positive movement after the bye. That starts with me.”
Now 3-6, the Bears playoff hopes are all but finished (the Detroit Lions lead the NFC North at 7-2). It's a far cry from the high expectations the team entered with. While some weaknesses on defense probably kept them from being a legitimate Super Bowl contender, a loaded offense had most expecting a run at the division title. But the offense under Cutler has been turnover-prone and inefficient.
“To play like that, it’s embarrassing,” Cutler, who has thrown four picks in his last three games, told the Chicago Sun-Times.
A curt and disappointed Trestman criticized the play of all three phases of the team, but repeatedly took the blame himself.
“Ultimately I’m responsible for the play of this football team and it’s not good enough right now.”
What surprises Trestman, he said, was that the team’s preparation during practice has been good.
“That’s what’s disturbing to me. The level of focus and work ethic is as good any team I’ve seen in my years in the league. What’s translating to the field is not what we expect based on what we’re seeing through course of the week.”
Cutler echoed that concern.
“We can’t figure it out right now,” he said. “I know we had a heck of a three days of practice.”
Trestman told WBBM Newsradio he does not plan on making any changes to his coaching staff, saying, “I’m extremely confident in our staff and the way they coach.”
