After Lou Piniella retired late last season, Mike Quade was named the interim manager for the rest of the year. The Cubs began interviewing potential full-time hires, and Ryne Sandberg was considered by many to be the favorite, but ultimately it was Quade himself who won out.
Mike Quade Named As Cubs Manager; Interim Tag Removed
#Cubs name Mike Quade manager.
Quade will reportedly get a two-year contract with a third year option. The 53 year old inherited a team with a 51-74 record and saw them go 24-13 the rest of the way, and he developed good relationships with those around him. It’s a sensible hire, if perhaps a less-popular one.
It remains to be seen whether Sandberg ends up with a spot on Quade’s staff, if he returns to manage in AAA, or if he leaves the organization entirely.
