Sandy Alderson To Join Mets As New General Manager

When the Mets dismissed Omar Minaya, their search for a new general manager led them to a lot of different people. Rick Hahn. Allard Baird. Josh Byrnes. Logan White. Dana Brown. However, from the beginning, Sandy Alderson was considered to be the odds-on favorite, and Tuesday night, via Jon Heyman, we learn that Alderson will indeed be the organization's selection.

Alderson and Byrnes were the two finalists, but Alderson seemingly always had the lead, and has now sealed the deal. There hasn't yet been any official announcement, but that will come shortly. Either after the World Series, or perhaps this Friday, a travel day during which the Rangers and Giants will fly to Texas.

The 62 year old Alderson has been in baseball for a long time, serving as Oakland A's president, A's general counsel, A's general manager, Major League Baseball executive vice president, and San Diego Padres CEO. He's considered to have been a mentor to Billy Beane, and his A's won the World Series in 1989. He's respected in all corners of the game, and his hiring will be met with widespread approval.

His first task with the Mets will be finding a new manager to replace Jerry Manuel. They’ll want to get that done in short order so that the front office can turn its attention to roster matters.
