Mets To Announce Sandy Alderson Hiring Friday Afternoon

It’s all official now - the Mets have decided to hire Sandy Alderson to serve as their new general manager, and the press conference will take place Friday afternoon, at 2pm ET.

It’s been said that Alderson’s first order of business in New York will be finding a new manager to replace the departed Jerry Manuel. But his actual first move may be filling out the rest of his front office staff. And towards that end, we have some leads:

According to several sources, [Alderson] already has reached out to Paul DePodesta, whom he hired in San Diego, to help strengthen the Mets' statistical department and J.P. Ricciardi, whom he worked with in Oakland, to assist on player personnel.

Aside from their prior work experiences with Alderson, DePodesta has also served as the GM of the Dodgers, while Ricciardi has served as the GM of the Blue Jays. They had some mixed results, but they’re experienced, and they’re also up to speed with some more contemporary statistical principles. Alderson’s looking to build something of a statistical All-Star team.

Mets blog Amazin’ Avenue has been covering the proceedings with great care and detail, and by and large they seem enthusiastic about the hire:
