Magglio Ordonez, Tigers Agree On One-Year Contract
According to Jon Heyman, Ordonez has agreed to a one-year contract with Detroit worth $10 million. He’ll take a pay cut from the substantial amount of money he earned in 2010, but eight figures was still probably more than he was expecting. Interestingly, there may be some organizational loyalty in play here, as Ordonez reportedly turned down two-year contract offers from other teams.

The Red Sox have a few spots they’d like to address on their roster. However, after trading for Adrian Gonzalez and reportedly working out a long-term contract extension, they don’t seem to have the money necessary to pull another home run by, say, signing Carl Crawford. So, as they search for some help in the outfield, one second-tier player who has caught their eye is Magglio Ordonez.
The Red Sox have been sniffing around Crawford and Carlos Beltran, and had interest in Jayson Werth, but they like Ordonez’s right-handedness and steady level of production. He is a player they could bring in to be a semi-regular in a rotation with Mike Cameron and Jacoby Ellsbury.

So while Magglio is still a very productive hitter, come the 2011 season, he’ll be a 37-year-old hitter with a recent history of injuries. He made $17 million last season, and it’s difficult to say exactly how much he’ll be able to command on the open market.
