Free agent outfielder Magglio Ordonez attracted a fair bit of attention as a second-tier possibility. The Red Sox in particular were known to be interested in the righty before they went and signed Carl Crawford. In the end, though, while Ordonez had his suitors, he's opted to re-sign with the TIgers.
Magglio Ordonez, Tigers Agree On One-Year Contract
According to Jon Heyman, Ordonez has agreed to a one-year contract with Detroit worth $10 million. He’ll take a pay cut from the substantial amount of money he earned in 2010, but eight figures was still probably more than he was expecting. Interestingly, there may be some organizational loyalty in play here, as Ordonez reportedly turned down two-year contract offers from other teams.
Ordonez, who turns 37 in January, batted .303 last season with an .852 OPS. He's managed an .843 OPS over the past three years, and while he's getting up there in age and isn't known for his defense, he's capable of getting the bat on the ball, reaching base, and drilling the occasional home run. He'll be an upgrade to an outfield that entered the offseason with Austin Jackson and a lot of question marks.
