Miguel Olivo, Mariners Agree To Two-Year Contract

Miguel Olivo has had a busy offseason, getting traded from Colorado to Toronto and then becoming a free agent after getting non-tendered shortly thereafter. And now he’s found himself a new home, signing on with the Seattle Mariners.

Olivo and the Mariners have agreed to a two-year contract with a third-year 2013 option. The financial breakdown of the contract is unknown, but it will guarantee Olivo $7 million.

Olivo is signing with the Mariners as the starting catcher, bumping youngster Adam Moore into the backup role. The Mariners are in dire need of offensive help, even after signing Jack Cust, and while Olivo won’t bring them any on-base ability, he should supply some power. Olivo has a career slugging percentage of .427 and has slugged .462 over the past three years. For a team that last year was starting Moore and Rob Johnson, that’s an improvement, even if Olivo isn’t a top-of-the-line player.

Olivo has played for Seattle once before, posting disastrous results, but the Mariners are hoping that’s a thing of the past. For more on Olivo, visit Lookout Landing.
