Rangers’ Chris Davis Available To First Serious Taker
Oh. Right. It was two years ago. Now he's a Man Without a Future. A future with the Rangers, anyway. So what do they do with him? T.R. Sullivan:
A trade is a possibility.
“We have been asked about him,” general manager Jon Daniels said. “Obviously there is no clean fit as we sit in Spring Training, but we all know things can change. We have to be prepared for anything. We’ve got time to see how things play out.”
Everybody asks about everybody. I have to think if another club makes a serious offer, Daniels will jump on it. Because there’s a lot of pain there ...
Three years ago, Chris Davis exploded into the majors. After terribly abusing Double-A and Triple-A pitchers for a few months, Davis joined the big club and posted a .285/.331/.549 in the second half of the season. He did strike out a lot, but he was 22 and looked like the Rangers’ future at first base for years coming.
Well, now that 2008 season looks like a mirage. Since then he hasn’t been as good in the minors, or nearly as good in the majors. In 555 plate appearances with the Rangers over last two seasons, Davis has racked up 190 strikeouts and a .283 on-base percentage, with nothing like the compensatory power.
Yes, he’s been effective when back in Triple-A Oklahoma City. But if you’re Jon Daniels or Nolan Ryan or anyone in between, those 555 plate appearances have taken a little something from your hide, and you’re at least a little gun-shy if not consarned sick and tired.
There's probably no future for Chris Davis in Texas. Not if Mitch Moreland and Adrian Beltre are healthy enough to play. But Davis turns just 25 this week, and he's got a .328/.395/.547 career line in Triple-A.
Those numbers don’t always indicate major-league success. But there must be a few teams out there with the roster space to find out for sure.
