There's something sort of endearing about the platonic love affair Baseball Men have with certain players. For example, Kevin Towers and Willie Bloomquist (via Nick Piecoro) ...
Kevin Towers Hearts Willie Bloomquist
"He's always ready," Towers said. "Those are the type of role-type players that you want. When they're called upon, they get the big hit or they draw the walk. He's a hard-working guy. He's going to be ready to play. He wants to play. He wants to ... more than just be a role guy, and I think you want that in your role players."
Bloomquist's got a 653 career OPS. With runners in scoring position it's 660.
In fairness to Towers (and Bloomquist), the numbers are somewhat better with runners in scoring position and two outs, and in late-and-close situations. And yes, Bloomie can play seven or eight positions. As long as his manager isn't foolish enough to use him regularly -- as Trey Hillman was in 2009 -- Bloomquist is a handy guy to have around.
