Mariners’ Dustin Ackley Attempting Rare Switch

David Pinto on Dustin Ackley’s continuing efforts to shift from the outfield to second base:

He'll play 2011 as a 23 year old, so maybe he's young enough to make the transition. However, players tend to move to the outfield young because they can't handle the middle infield. If the Mariners pull this off, it means someone missed something with Dustin along the way, either in High School or college.

↵True, if unlikely. You can’t fault the Mariners for giving this a shot. The only real concern is that learning a new position a) doesn’t work, and b) hinders Ackley’s development as a hitter. Then you’ve got a left fielder who can’t hit enough to play left field. Actually, Ackley hasn’t done enough in his one professional season to suggest he’s a good enough hitter to play left field, anyway. Which might mean he has to play second base if he’s going to play at all.
