Tigers vs. Red Sox, ALCS Game 6 scoreless after four innings

Max Scherzer has a bumpy third inning, but he’s back in strikeout shape.

Jose Iglesias greeted Clay Buchholz with a single to lead off the third inning, but following the knock, the righty buckled down, getting Torii Hunter to fly out to left field, Miguel Cabrera to strike out, and the struggling Prince Fielder to ground out to first baseman Mike Napoli to escape the inning.

Max Scherzer, who struck out the side in the second inning, performed a 180 in the third inning, walking the first two batters, Xander Bogaerts and Jacoby Ellsbury. However, Scherzer helped himself out by getting Shane Victorino to pop a bunt up in front of home plate. Scherzer scurried off the mound and made a sliding grab to get the first out of the inning.

Dustin Pedroia stepped up next and drilled a ball to deep left field, less than a foot foul. The umpiring crew conferred, then elected to take a second look, but the initial ruling of a foul ball was upheld. That proved unfortunate for Pedroia, who grounded into a 5-3 double play a few pitches later.

Buchholz worked quickly in the fourth inning, sending Victor Martinez, Jhonny Peralta, and Alex Avila back to the dugout on 11 pitches.

After an eventful third inning, Scherzer, too, worked a fast fourth, getting David Ortiz to pop up and whiffing Napoli and Jarrod Saltalamacchia, his fourth and fifth strikeouts of the night.
