The New York Yankees placed veteran starter Andy Pettitte on the 15-day disabled list Friday with a strained left trapezius muscle, Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com reported. Vidal Nuno from Triple-A was recalled to take Pettitte's spot on the roster and in the rotation.

Pettitte left his start on Thursday after throwing 79 pitches over 4⅔ innings against the Seattle Mariners. The 40-year-old pitcher stiffened up and grimaced after the 79th pitch, and left the game after a meeting on the mound with manager Joe Girardi.
Girardi discussed Pettitte earlier on Friday, and acknowledged that the team was considering placing the lefty on the disabled list. The Yankees manager did say that Pettittte felt better Friday morning, but said that the team could not skip his start in the rotation; Pettitte needed to be healthy enough to make his next start, or would be sent to the disabled list.
Pettitte has pitched fairly well for the Yankees this season, going 4-3 with a 3.88 ERA. General manager Brian Cashman says the team is playing it safe with Pettitte by giving him some extra rest and that the team “didn’t expect him to give us 200 innings this year.” Pettitte appears optimistic about the situations, as he expects to only miss the minimum 15 days during his DL stint.
Nuno pitched in two games earlier this season for New York, including one start. The 25-year-old lefty has yet to allow a run over eight innings, striking out five hitters while walking three.
