Roy Halladay injury: Phillies RHP placed on DL with right shoulder inflammation

Shoulder pain could be to blame for Roy Halladay’s bloated 8.65 ERA in 2013 -- and a nine-run, 2.1 inning outing against the Marlins Sunday -- as the would-be ace is going to the DL with an inflammation.

Roy Halladay will be placed on the 15-day disabled list due to right shoulder inflammation, per the Phillies official twitter account, as the team hopes that the hypothetical ace’s problems on the mound have been due to injury.

The 35-year-old with a pair of Cy Youngs to his name just hasn’t been himself in 2013. After his ERA nearly doubled from 2.35 to 4.49 in between 2011 and 2012, Halladay has given up five or more runs in four of his seven starts. His last two have been his worst: eight earned runs in 3.2 innings against the Indians, nine in 2.1 against the lowly Marlins on Sunday. His 33 earned runs allowed leads the major leagues, and his 8.65 ERA is brutal.

Then came news that Halladay had shoulder pain -- Phillies fans were thrilled -- and after the Marlins outing, it was off to the DL. The shoulder has apparently been bugging him for a while, but he hadn’t mentioned it to team personnel.

If there’s a shoulder issue for Halladay that can be solved with some rest and medical attention, that could actually be good news for the Phillies. If not, it could mean he’s just lost the touch, and only three years removed from a Cy Young season, that could be scary.

The team called up Joe Savery, a 27-year-old lefty reliever with a 4.71 ERA in 24 major league appearances. Phillies blog The Good Phight speculated about who would take Halladay’s role in the rotation, with Tyler Cloyd the likely choice.
