2013 MLB Draft results: Pick Nos. 55-59

Teams continue to eat into a strong crop of pitchers in the second round of the 2013 MLB Draft.

No. 55: RHP Tyler Danish, Chicago White Sox

Baseball America on Danish:

Danish has filthy stuff [but is listed] at 6’1, 185 pounds but thought to be shorter and heavier.

Not listed in the Top 100 for ESPN’s Keith Law or MLB.com’s Jonathan Mayo

No. 56: LHP Tom Windle, Los Angeles Dodgers

Baseball America on Windle:

Scouts don’t love Windle’s delivery, which features some stiffness and recoil, and some wonder if he has the third pitch, athleticism and command to be a big league starter.

Keith Law adds:

His fastball is usually 88-92 without a ton of life, although he throws it for strikes.

No. 57: SS Oscar Mercado, St. Louis Cardinals

MLB.com’s Jonathan Mayo on Mercado:

[Mercado] has very good actions at shortstop, with no question about his ability to defend at the premium spot.

Baseball America adds:

Mercado struggled under the microscope of his draft season, hitting just .286 with five extra-base hits.

No. 58: LHP Kevin Ziomek, Detroit Tigers

MLB.com’s Jonathan Mayo on Ziomek:

He has very good stuff from the left side, with a good three-pitch mix. His fastball can be plus at times, he has an outstanding changeup and an effective breaking ball to go along with it. There’s some concern about his arm action, but Vandy lefties who perform well tend to do pretty well on Draft day.

No. 59: LHP Hunter Green, Los Angeles Angels

Green can already reach the low-90s with his fastball, and could add more velocity as he continues to fill out his frame. The lefty also throws a curveball and a changeup, but both pitches have been described as needing more work. Green has also battled issues with his command, but scouts believe that cleaning up his delivery can help fix those issues. Given his youth, these kinds of developmental issues are to be expected for now.
