Giants right-hander Yusmeiro Petit came within one out of a perfect game on Friday night, beating the Diamondbacks, 3-0, at AT&T Park in San Francisco. Petit, 28, retired the first 26 batters of the game before Eric Chavez singled to right field to break it up.

Chavez lined a single that landed just in front of Hunter Pence in right field with two outs in the ninth inning, giving Arizona their only base runner of the night.

Petit was efficient in his outing, never having even a three-ball count on a batter until catcher Miguel Montero with two outs in the eighth inning. Montero grounded out to first base to end the inning. Petit threw first-pitch strikes to 21 of 28 batters faced.
The Diamondbacks went quietly in the ninth inning before Chavez, as Chris Owings struck out swinging and Gerardo Parra grounded out to second base. A.J. Pollock grounded to third base to end the game.
It was the first complete game and shutout of Petit’s career. He improved to 3-0 with a 2.05 ERA in four games, including three starts, on the season.
