Madison Bumgarner to start World Series Game 1 for Giants
In an expected move, the San Francisco Giants named ace Madison Bumgarner their starting pitcher for Game 1 of the World Series on Tuesday night against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium.
The San Francisco Giants on Saturday named Madison Bumgarner their starter for Game 1 of the World Series, on Tuesday night against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City. Giants manager Bruce Bochy made the announcement after a Saturday workout at AT&T Park in San Francisco, per Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle.
Bumgarner will face off against James Shields, named on Saturday as the Royals' Game 1 starter.
Following Bumgarner for the Giants will be Jake Peavy in Game 2, Tim Hudson in Game 2 and Ryan Vogelsong in Game 4, the same rotation they used in the NLCS.
The ace of the Giants’ staff, Bumgarner was 18-10 with a 2.98 ERA in 33 starts in 2014, with 219 strikeouts and 43 walks in 217⅓ innings. In the playoffs he has been even better, at 2-1 with a 1.42 ERA in four starts with 28 strikeouts and five walks in 31⅔ innings. He was named the NLCS MVP.
Royals vs. Giants
Bumgarner threw eight innings on Thursday in the clinching Game 5 of the NLCS, and will start on Tuesday on his regular four days of rest.
This is the third World Series start for Bumgarner, who is in his third Fall Classic with the Giants in five years. The left-hander has yet to allow a run in World Series play, with eight scoreless innings in a win over the Texas Rangers in Game 4 in 2010 and seven scoreless frames in Game 2 against the Detroit Tigers in 2012.
Bumgarner has an active streak of 26⅔ consecutive scoreless innings on the road in the postseason dating back to 2010, a major league record.
He has faced the Royals once in his career, and lasted eight innings on Aug. 8 in Kansas City, but suffered the loss. He allowed four runs, including three earned runs.
Game 1 of the World Series is scheduled for Tuesday night at 8:07 p.m. on Fox, with Joe Buck, Harold Reynolds and Tom Verducci on the call, alongside reporters Ken Rosenthal and Erin Andrews.
