Jake Peavy started Game 6 of the World Series in Kansas City despite a thumb injury, but ace left-hander Madison Bumgarner is available to pitch if needed, San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy told reporters earlier on Tuesday.
Jake Peavy pitching through thumb injury, Madison Bumgarner available in Game 6
Bruce Bochy might not be able to resist the urge to go with Madison Bumgarner on one day of rest if Jake Peavy can’t shake off a thumb issue.

Bochy downplayed Peavy’s thumb issue before the game, noting that the 33-year-old right-hander wouldn’t be pitching if he was exhibiting any negative effects from the injury. Peavy has failed to last at least six innings in any of his previous eight postseason starts, so even if the thumb isn’t bothering him, Bochy might be inclined to use a quick hook anyway.
Bumgarner, the current World Series MVP favorite, has allowed only one run in 16 innings spanning two starts this series. The 25-year-old North Carolina native has given up just six earned runs in six total starts this postseason. He last pitched on Sunday, when he held the Kansas City Royals to four hits en route to his second shutout during the 2014 playoffs.
