Andrew Benintendi’s Game 2 catch was a balletic masterpiece

With the Dodgers looking to add to a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning of World Series Game 2 Wednesday night, they thought they would be able to keep their bats going against David Price and notch a few more runs. When Brian Dozier lined one into left to lead off the inning, it looked like the inning was getting off to a great start for LA.

Andrew Benintendi had other thoughts. Showing off his defensive skills in the outfield once again, after making a game-saving catch in the ALCS, he made a leaping catch that is just as fun to watch in motion as it is to freeze frame.

That takes some serious skill — not just the catch but the pre-catch spotting and the way he lands so close to the wall as well. It’s balletic and mesmerizing and incredibly skilled. Definitely something that deserves to be watched multiple times.

The outline of the catch would make a great MLB logo. The old one has been around long enough, don’t you think? It had its time.

The Boston Globe captured an incredible angle of the catch. It’s incredible both for distilling the awesomeness of Beni’s catch to one frame so well, but mostly because it also gets the AL East standings in the frame as well. Which means everyone gets to be reminded once again that the Baltimore Orioles were 61 games back this year. That will never get old.

That only makes the catch better, because you’re reminded of what the Red Sox did this year in the wins column and also one of the main reasons they were able to do it in Andrew Benintendi. He just keeps topping himself with his defensive accomplishments out there in left, whether at home at Fenway or not.
