The MLB Draft is today! It’s also tomorrow, and the next day: the MLB Draft just kind of goes on and on, which is what happens when you have 40 rounds. Yup, 40 rounds. That’s about 1,200 players when all is said and done, most of which are picked to be competition for the much smaller number of players from each draft class that will actually make it to the majors. It’s a pretty brutal system with severe exploitation, but hey, let’s save that conversation for later this week: today is about shiny new toys!
It’s MLB Draft day!
Monday’s Say Hey, Baseball reminds you the annual draft kicks off today.

The Tigers will pick first, thanks to Pablo Sandoval hitting a homer in the final game of 2017. You can see the full draft order here, or you can wait until 7 p.m. ET and watch it on MLB Network or MLB and let your life be full of surprises. I won’t tell you how to live your life.
“Marc, why aren’t you doing more to preview the draft for us?” Please, we here at SB Nation are experts at many things, but even the people who are good at telling you about the draft aren’t always any good at it. I’m the only honest person in your life right now.
Look, here’s Baseball America’s draft homepage, and MLB.com is loaded with previews and mocks. I’ve led you to water, now drink if you want to.
- J.D. Scholten is a former professional pitcher making a run in Iowa’s 4th Congressional District. Can he make history with a defeat against the incredibly racisft and awful Steve King?
- There’s a lot to love in this week’s Grant Land, but I recommend Max Scherzer’s incredibly aggressive celebration face, as well as the reenactment of baseball in 1983.
- Luke Heimlich, who pled guilty to molesting his then-six-year-old niece, will likely be drafted by an MLB team in the second round. You should read Jessica Luther on how the sports media still doesn’t know how to cover sexual assault before that happens. And then again, afterward.
- Sheryl Ring on Heimlich and relitigating the past is also required reading.
- This is the only mock draft you really need today: Baseball Prospectus mocked the first round solely on the strength of prospect names.
- The NCAA Baseball Tournament is ongoing, and we’re keeping track of all of it for you.
- Pinstripe Alley wants to remind Yankees fans that the Yankees still got the better end of the Giancarlo Stanton/J.D. Martinez chases.
- Brew Crew Ball wants you to know that the Brewers are not burning out their relievers.
- And here’s Bless You Boys looking at how the Tigers might use all their bonus money in this year’s draft.
