The Red Sox have won 107 games. The Astros have won 100 games. What does this have to do with an article about the Yankees, you ask? Everything! Should the Yankees win three of their final four games of 2018, they’ll have 100 wins, too: there have never been three teams in the same league with at least 100 wins before, but the Yankees are just three Ws shy of this MLB first.
The Yankees have 4 games left to make MLB history
If the Yankees can pick up three more wins in their last four games, they’ll be a part of something that’s never happened in MLB history.

There have been three 100-win teams across MLB in a single season before: in 1942 (Cardinals, Dodgers, Yankees), in 1977 (Royals, Phillies, Yankees), in 1998 (Yankees, Braves, Astros), in 2002 (Yankees, Athletics, Braves), in 2003 (Yankees, Braves, Giants), and most recently in 2017, when the Dodgers (104), Indians (102), and Astros (101) all managed the feat.
There have never been three teams from just the American League or National League to win 100 games in a single season, however, and with the A’s already dropping two games this week, the chances of us seeing it for the first time dropped, as Oakland can only win a maximum of 99 games now. The Yankees still have a chance, as outside of one as it is, to reach triple-digits and give us some history, though. All they have to do is defeat the Rays on Thursday, and then win two out of three against the Red Sox, who lead the majors in wins.
OK, sure, it won’t be easy. The Red Sox already have homefield locked up throughout the postseason, though, and the AL East was wrapped up even earlier this month. They aren’t playing for much of anything over the weekend, outside of keeping everyone healthy and as rested as possible heading into their American League Division Series next week against the winner of the A’s-Yankees AL Wild Card Game. They might not be firing on all cylinders on purpose, and that increases the chances the Yankees can pick up the wins they need to reach triple digits.
If the Yankees do manage to make it to 100 wins, and the A’s fall just short of doing the same, then we can be annoyed at Oakland for depriving us of the first-ever season with four 100-win teams in MLB. Ah, well, we need something to look forward to in 2019, I guess.
