New England Revolution vs. Chicago Fire: Final score 1-0, Revs end Fire’s chances at first

The Fire thought they would have a chance at first place in the East, but the Revolution killed those hopes with a 1-0 win in Foxboro.

The Chicago Fire entered Saturday just three points back of Sporting Kansas City for first place in the Eastern Conference and with them playing the New England Revolution while Sporting was at New York, catching Kansas City seemed realistic. The Revs made sure to extinguish those dreams, though, upending the Fire 1-0 and sending Chicago from contending for first to trying to stay out of the wild card game.

Diego Fagundez notched the winner for New England in the 17th minute after taking a pass from Kelyn Rowe. He then worked his way into space, which the Fire defense was oddly happy to give him, before a clinical finish just inside the far post delivered all three points for the Revs.

It was a deserved win for the Revolution, who was the better team for most of the first half. The Fire came back with some bright play in the second half, but it was never consistent and they struggled to create chances while the Revs continued to look calm en route to the victory.

Chicago is now four points back of Kansas City with just one match to play, giving them no chance at first place. They are only two points ahead of New York and three ahead of Houston, with both having the edge in goals scored.
