Portland Timbers vs. San Jose Earthquakes: Final score 1-1, Wondolowski equals MLS record in draw

Chris Wondolowski scored to tie the MLS single-seasons coring record in the Quakes’ draw with the Timbers.

Chris Wondolowski didn't set a new MLS record for goals in a single-season, but he did match the mark set by Roy Lassiter in the league's first season. The San Jose Earthquakes striker scored from the penalty spot to give him 27 goals on the season, a goal that also earned the Quakes a 1-1 draw with the Portland Timbers, to cap a tremendous regular season and give him a share of the league record.

Steven Lenhart drew the penalty for Wondolowsi, beating Donovan Ricketts to a long ball and getting around the Timbers goalkeeper. Ricketts recovered to challenge Lenhart and poked the ball away, but the striker did a nice job of selling the little bit of contact and the referee awarded a penalty. With a chance to tie the MLS record, Wondolowski was always going to take the kick and he took it well. He slotted it low into the corner to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

It looked like Wondolowski would break Lassiter's record when he took a long ball over the top of the defense and had just Ricketts to beat, but David Horst hustled back and made a last second tackle to deny the chance at history.

With 23 minutes to go, Bright Dike made sure the Timbers fans could end a sour season with a bit of a bright spot. He got the ball through a shaky Quakes defense and while Jon Busch did turn away his first attempt, Dike got the rebound and knocked it home to earn Portland a point.

This match had no real consequence for each team. The Quakes had already clinched the Supporters’ Shield and The Timbers’ season has been over for months, but neither team will be too upset with a point.
