UFC 136 Fight Card: Nam Phan Vs. Leonard Garcia Rematch Targeted For Houston

After a string of UFC 136 injury withdrawals, capped by Matt Grice's late scratch on Wednesday, the promotion has arrived to a familiar conclusion. Nam Phan (16-9) will receive a chance to avenge a controversial loss against Leonard Garcia (15-7-1) in a featherweight bout on the event's undercard. UFC officials confirmed the bout on Thursday.

The pair first fought at the finale of “The Ultimate Fighter 12,” with Garcia claiming a narrow split decision victory over the 28-year-old. However, the result was mired in controversy and Phan was still awarded a win bonus by the UFC for his performance. Both fighters received a bonus for “Fight of the Night.”

Since then Phan dropped a bout against Mike Brown at UFC 133, marking his fourth loss in his last five contests. Prior to the slump, the Vietnamese-American claimed victory in three of four fights inside Sengoku and various regional promotions.

Garcia has also tumbled since the pair's original bout, dropping a rematch against Chan Sung Jung in March via second-round twister. The loss was the second in three fights for the WEC veteran, and marked the first time the submission had been successfully utilized in UFC history.

UFC 136 is slated for October 8th at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. The event is headlined between a pair of title fights, lightweight champion Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard, and featherweight champion Jose Aldo vs. Kenny Florian.
