NASCAR team owner Rick Hendrick is out of the hospital this morning after sustaining a broken rib and collarbone when his plane ran off the end of a runway in Key West, Fla. on Monday night.
Rick Hendrick Sustains Broken Rib, Collarbone In Plane Crash Monday Night
Hendrick is back safely in North Carolina, along with his wife, Linda, and their two pilots. Linda Hendrick was treated for minor cuts and bruises and neither pilot was injured.
The Gulfstream G150 aircraft experienced “braking issues” upon landing, according to the team, and went off the end of the runway.
The Associated Press reported the plane ran off into a safety area that was just completed in May.
“If we hadn’t done that, it likely would have been a different story,” the airport’s director told the AP.
Hendrick’s drivers were shaken by the incident.
“Yeah, it was a real big scare,” Dale Earnhardt Jr. told web site Queers4Gears.com. “Very frightening to hear. I’m very glad that he and everybody appear to be OK.”
Said Jimmie Johnson, who co-owned the plane and uses it weekly to get to and from the racetrack: “We’re just beyond thankful that everything turned out well with the crash and there weren’t any major injuries.”
