Las Vegas Motor Speedway won’t be the site of an Izod IndyCar Series race in 2012, the series announced Thursday night.
IndyCar Won’t Return To Las Vegas Motor Speedway In 2012 Following Dan Wheldon’s Death
Vegas was the site of IndyCar’s much-hyped 2011 finale, in which Dan Wheldon would start in the back and try to come through the field while attempting to win a $5 million prize.
As you know, Wheldon was then tragically killed in a horrific accident that left emotional scars across the motorsports world.
It’s no surprise, then, that IndyCar decided not to return to the track next season – even though it had previously been contracted to do so.
IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard said IndyCar wants more time to investigate the accident and would then need the opportunity for thorough testing of its new car on high-banked ovals.
Bernard seemed to leave open the possibility of a 2013 race at LVMS.
The open-wheel series will begin its season on March 25 in St. Petersburg, but the full schedule has not yet been announced.
