Kyle Busch failed post-race inspection on Sunday after NASCAR inspectors discovered his No. 18 car was too low on the left front following the 5-Hour Energy 500 at Pocono Raceway.
Kyle Busch Fails Post-Race Inspection After Third-Place Result At Pocono
Busch, who is fifth in the Sprint Cup Series point standings, stands to be the first driver to be penalized under NASCAR’s new points system.
The No. 18 car will be brought back to NASCAR’s Research and Development Center in Concord, N.C. for further evaluation.
While we can’t speculate on the severity of the infraction without further information, penalties for being too low at the height sticks in the past have been of the 25-point variety. That, though, was under the old points system in which drivers could earn nearly 200 points per race.
A 25-point penalty in the new system would obviously have a much greater impact, so it’s likely NASCAR won’t follow that route.
Would a 25-point penalty equate to a five-point penalty in today’s system?
We’ll likely find out when NASCAR releases its findings on Tuesday or Wednesday.
