Following a one-race internal suspension for a DUI arrest, John Wes Townley will make his official return to NASCAR next weekend at Martinsville Speedway.
John Wes Townley Returns To NASCAR In Martinsville Truck Race
Townley will race in the Camping World Truck Series event for RAB Racing, his former team that offered another shot at NASCAR only to see him crash a new BMW into a telephone pole while allegedly under the influence.
In a statement, Townley said he had changed his ways.
“I made a terrible mistake, but I am now ready, having a renewed relationship with God in my life, to move forward making better decisions,” Townley said in a press release distributed by his team. “Martinsville will be the start of a new chapter in my life, in more ways than one. My future actions will demonstrate where my heart is, and that I am on a mission.”
Townley last raced in NASCAR on Sept. 4, 2010. But he mysteriously failed to show up for the Richmond race on the day of the event, and RAB Racing didn’t hear from him for months.
The driver known as “Chicken Man” resurfaced in February, though, when it was revealed he would drive a truck full-time for RAB this season.
NASCAR placed Townley on probation Thursday upon news of his impending return, but team owner Robby Benton said RAB has “stood by our commitment” to the driver.
“It was an unfortunate situation that occurred, and a mistake was made,” he said. “We now look towards the future and building on a lesson learned. We will work closely with NASCAR and their programs as he returns to full-time competition in the Camping World Truck Series.”
