NASCAR point standings after Kansas: Jimmie Johnson retains championship lead

Jeff Zelevansky

Jimmie Johnson extended his NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship lead over Kasey Kahne and Brad Keselowski with a third-place finish in Sunday’s race at Kansas Speedway.

Kahne moved up five spots to second in the standings as a result of his runner-up at Kansas while Keselowski’s 25-point penalty plus a sixth-place on Sunday has the pair 37 and 38 points behind - nearly a full race’s worth of points.

Joey Logano also received a 25-point penalty prior to Sunday’s race but was also caught up in an accident with Kyle Busch, leaving him 39th in the running order and all the way back to 20th in the championship standings, a tremendous turnaround for a driver who was just in the top-10 before the NRA 500 at Texas.

Both Penske Racing teams will appeal their penalties but a hearing date has not been set.

Denny Hamlin fell to 26th in the standings after missing his third-consecutive race. Hamlin is hoping to return by next Saturday’s race at Richmond but has not been officially cleared. The complete NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship standings can be found below:
