Tony Stewart joins Twitter ... seriously

A notable Twitter holdout, Tony Stewart joined the social media site Friday.

Start hoarding canned goods and bottled water. Tony Stewart is now on Twitter.

Yes, that Tony Stewart, the three-time NASCAR champion and an oft critic of the social media site.

Stewart posted his first tweet Friday shortly after the conclusion of practice for Saturday’s all-star race. The tweet showcased Stewart’s sardonic wit, and also acknowledged his past reluctance to join Twitter.

“Ok so here it is,” Stewart tweeted. “I’m doing my part to combat global warming because now that I’m officially tweeting, hell is freezing over!”

Stewart-Haas Racing, which had previously reserved @TonyStewart, confirmed it was indeed Stewart posting. Dale Earnhardt Jr., who began tweeting in the aftermath of his February Daytona 500 by sharing a photo of him posing in Victory Lane, and Brad Keselowski, an advocate and frequent Twitter user, quickly welcomed Stewart.

When the day began, Stewart had roughly 186,000 followers, but that number had risen to nearly 200,000 within an hour of his first post.
