2014 Coke Zero 400: Barney Hall to call final NASCAR race for MRN at Daytona

NASCAR’s lead radio voice will call his last race Sunday at Daytona.

John David Mercer-USA TODAY Sports

Legendary announcer Barney Hall of the Motor Racing Network will call his last NASCAR race Sunday at Daytona International Speedway.

NASCAR president Mike Helton made the announcement Saturday during the drivers’ meeting prior to the Coke Zero 400.

Hall, 82, has been the play-by-play announcer for MRN since 1970 and began calling races in 1958. He has become the voice of NASCAR, calling almost every historical moment since joining MRN. Hall isn’t retiring, but will transition into a different role at MRN that will see him spotlight various drivers, races and tracks.

The Coke Zero 400 was postponed from Saturday night to Sunday due to rain.

Recognizing his influence on the sport, the NASCAR Hall of Fame named the Squire-Hall Award for contributions by the media after Hall and television personality Ken Squier. Various drivers, including Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Clint Bowyer, posted tributes to Hall on Twitter.
