Joe Gibbs Racing president J.D. Gibbs announced Wednesday that he is undergoing treatment for symptoms impacting areas of his brain function.

An exact diagnosis of Gibbs’ condition was not revealed, only that he has experienced “a gradual onset of symptoms that includes speech and processing issues,” likely stemming from a brain injury suffered years ago. However, doctors couldn’t specify the exact cause. Gibbs has begun treatment, and while he will continue to have a day-to-day presence at JGR’s headquarters, his time at the track will be limited.

Gibbs is the son of team principle Joe Gibbs, a three-time Super Bowl-winning coach and NFL Hall of Famer. The 46-year-old played football at the College of William and Mary and is a former race car driver with 13 NASCAR national tour starts spread across the Xfinity and Camping World Truck Series.

JGR fields four Sprint Cup cars for drivers Matt Kenseth, Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin and Carl Edwards, in addition to multiple Xfinity teams. J.G. Gibbs took over as company president in 1997 and was instrumental in the organization’s expansion.

NASCAR CEO Brian France offered well wishes and support for Gibbs and his family.

“All members of the NASCAR and France family extend our thoughts and prayers to J.D. Gibbs and his loved ones,” France said in a statement. “We’ve all watched J.D. grow up within our community, and he always has represented himself, his family, the entire Joe Gibbs Racing organization and NASCAR with the utmost professionalism, enthusiasm and energy. We wish him the best during this time and eagerly anticipate his recovery.”
