2015 NASCAR at Bristol Motor Speedway: Race day weather update

Rain has delayed the start of today’s Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway. What does the weather look like for the rest of the day and evening?

As expected, rain showers have been affecting Bristol Motor Speedway all morning and into the early afternoon. As of 1:30 p.m. ET, a break in the rain moved over the speedway, and track drying got underway. That break will be short since another round of rain will move in behind it, but not all is lost.

CAN NASCAR RACE TODAY? Signs of drier weather are showing up southwest of Knoxville, Tenn., as of Sunday afternoon. This is the window I’ve been talking about since Saturday. I still think the odds of racing are around 40 percent for today. It is less than 50 percent because of uncontrollable factors — track drying time, more scattered showers forming later this evening and the decisions of NASCAR personnel.
A window of opportunity could start to open up between 5 and 9 p.m. ET. I am slightly optimistic they could dry and start the race later this evening.

WHAT DOES MONDAY’S FORECAST LOOK LIKE? I am not giving up on Sunday just yet but Monday’s forecast looks better were the race moved. While showers and storms are still in the forecast they are more scattered, giving NASCAR a better chance of getting a complete race.

The weather at Bristol Motor Speedway is sure to change throughout the day Sunday, so follow me on Twitter @NASCAR_WXMAN and like me on Facebook for the latest weather updates.
