Tony Stewart sends plane to fly family of injured IndyCar driver Justin Wilson

Tony Stewart lent his plane to the family of injured IndyCar driver Justin Wilson Sunday night so that they could make it to Wilson’s bedside as he lays in a coma in an Allentown, Pa., hospital.

Wilson is in critical condition with a severe head injury after being struck in the helmet with a piece of debris off the car of Sage Karam during Sunday’s IndyCar Series race at Pocono Raceway.

Karam had spun and wrecked in Turn 1, sending large pieces of debris flying through the air. The piece that hit Wilson appeared to be a section of nosecone and seemingly knocked the 37-year-old unconscious, causing him to crash into an inside wall.

Shortly after the accident Wilson’s younger brother, Stefan, tweeted he was trying to arrange transportation for himself and Wilson’s wife so that they could be at his side.

That Stewart had his plane fly the Wilson family is not an uncommon gesture by the three-time NASCAR champion, who often performs such charitable acts and only requests that they go unpublicized. The only reason his generosity Sunday became known was due to several IndyCar drivers and personalities tweeting their appreciation for Stewart’s kindness.
