In a race where he needs a good result to remain championship-eligible, Kurt Busch wrecked his primary car in final practice Saturday and will switch to a backup for Sunday’s Hollywood Casino 400 at Kansas Speedway.
Kurt Busch wrecks in final practice at Kansas, moves to backup car for Sunday’s race
Busch had qualified 15th, but will now drop to the rear of the field for Sunday’s playoff race.

Busch had a right front tire go down in the closing minutes of the session, causing him to spin off Turn 4 and into the frontstretch grass severely damaging the nose of the No. 41 car. He had recorded the third-fastest single-lap in practice.
By going to a backup, Busch will forfeit his 15th-place starting position and drop to the rear of the 40-car field on Sunday.
Kansas is the second of three races in the quarterfinal round of the Chase for the Sprint Cup. The four lowest-ranked drivers of the 12 in NASCAR’s playoffs will be eliminated after next weekend’s race at Talladega Superspeedway. Busch is 21 points ahead of the cutline.
Polesitter Matt Kenseth’s 186.361 mph lap was the fastest lap of the session.
