NASCAR suspended a trio of Sprint Cup Series crew chiefs Wednesday for infractions found following Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
NASCAR suspends crew chiefs for Kurt Busch, Greg Biffle, AJ Allmendinger
The infractions were discovered following Sunday’s race at Charlotte.

Greg Biffle’s crew chief, Brian Pattie, earned a two-race suspension after Biffle’s No. 16 car was determined to have a body design that was either not submitted to NASCAR for approval or did not comply with the approved body designs. Pattie was also fined $50,000, with Biffle losing 15 driver points and team owner Jack Roush 15 points.
Pattie will miss Sunday’s race at Pocono Raceway and the June 12 event at Michigan International Speedway.
Tony Gibson and Randall Burnett will each serve one-race suspensions after officials determined the lug nuts on the cars of Kurt Busch (Gibson) and AJ Allmendinger (Burnett) were not properly fastened. Both Gibson and Burnett were also fined $20,000, but their teams were not docked any points. They will miss Sunday’s Pocono race.
Gibson and Burnett join Adam Stevens, Kyle Busch’s crew chief, as crew chiefs who’ve been suspended under NASCAR’s revised lug nut policy. The rule, which into effect April 25, requires the maximum five lug nuts be secured before a car leaves pit road. Stevens was suspended May 11 and sat out one race.
In addition to the three suspensions, Tony Stewart’s crew chief, Mike Bugarewicz, was placed on probation through the end of the year after violations pertaining to the body design and surface conformance on Stewart’s Chevrolet. The unconformities were discovered during pre-race inspection.
